Every Karjat waterfall has the same life cycle. It appears in the second week of June, peaks in August, thins out by October and is a damp rock face by Diwali. Get the timing right and the taluka has more falling water per square kilometre than anywhere else within two hours of Mumbai.
We run three villas inside Villa Montana near Vare, on the Karjat-Murbad Road, and every monsoon weekend the first question on WhatsApp is “which waterfall?”. This is the answer we give, ranked by how good the fall is against how many people you will share it with.

The big, easy ones
1. Bhivpuri waterfall (Bekare)
The one everyone means when they say “Karjat waterfall”. A short walk from Bhivpuri Road station, it is broad rather than tall, with a shallow pool at the base where families sit in the water. It is also the busiest waterfall in the taluka, with food stalls, parking touts and on a Sunday in August, a few thousand people.
Our advice: go on a weekday, or be there by 8 am on a weekend. After heavy overnight rain the police close access, and they are right to; the flow turns dangerous quickly.
2. Kondana Caves waterfall
A stream drops past the mouth of the 2,000-year-old Buddhist caves, so you get history and a shower in one 40 minute walk from Kondivade village. The last rock section is slippery. It is the second most crowded spot on this list, for the same reason it is the second best.
3. Palasdari
On the Karjat-Khopoli line, next to the small Palasdari dam. The falls run down a stepped rock face beside the railway and are best seen from the dam side. Quieter than Bhivpuri, with an easy walk and a lake for the non-swimmers to sit by.

4. Ulhas valley streams on the Vangani side
Drive the Bhivpuri to Vangani road after a week of rain and every gully on the Matheran slopes is running. None has a name on a map, all are a short scramble from the road, and most weekends you will have them to yourselves. This is where we send guests who want water without a queue.
5. Pali Bhutivali dam overflow
Ten minutes from Villa Montana. Once the dam fills, usually by late July, water sheets over the spillway and the bund becomes the nicest evening walk in the area. It is not a waterfall to stand under, but for a sunset with the Matheran ridge behind it, nothing closer beats it.
6. Solanpada dam spillway
A little further up the Karjat-Murbad Road. Same idea as Pali Bhutivali, a bigger spillway, and a lake that looks like a postcard in August. Viewing only; the current below the spillway is strong.
Worth the longer drive
7. Zenith Falls, Khopoli
Tall, loud and genuinely spectacular after a big rain, about 30 km away by the Karjat-Khopoli road. The path from the town is rocky and the base pool is deep. Not for young children, and go early because Khopoli’s proximity to the expressway brings the Pune and Mumbai crowds.
8. Kondeshwar, Badlapur
A temple, a stream and a set of falls in a forested pocket beyond Badlapur, about 32 km from the estate. Medium crowds, an easy walk, and a good stop on the way back to Thane or Kalyan.
9. Dodhani, on the Panvel side of Matheran
Below the Panvel-side slopes of Matheran, about 35 km from the estate and reached from Dodhani village with a 30 minute walk in. It is the starting point of the old Matheran trekking trail, so the crowd is trekkers rather than picnic groups, and the fall itself is tall and narrow. Worth combining with a Matheran day if you are driving that way anyway.
10. The falls on the Rajmachi trail
Take the Karjat-side trek to Rajmachi from Kondivade and you cross three or four streams in the first two hours, each with its own drop. Nobody sits at these because everyone is walking. Waterfall safety in Karjat, from people who live here
- Check the previous night’s rain. Flash floods on the Matheran slopes happen within an hour of a cloudburst upstream. If it rained hard overnight, go to a dam, not a fall.
- Never climb above a waterfall for a photo. Almost every monsoon accident in the taluka is this.
- Do not drink at the falls. Local police fine and, some weekends, detain people for it at Bhivpuri and Kondana.
- Wear shoes with grip. Floaters are how ankles get broken on wet basalt.
- Leave by 4 pm. Light goes fast under the monsoon cloud, and the road back has no lighting.
Where to stay for a waterfall weekend
Everything on this list is within 35 km of Nandan Villa, and the six closest are within 20. Bhivpuri (Bekare) is the biggest and most popular, Kondana Caves is the most scenic with the caves beside it, and the unnamed streams on the Bhivpuri to Vangani road are the best if you want to avoid crowds. For a tall, dramatic fall, Zenith at Khopoli is worth the 30 km drive.
When is the best time to see waterfalls in Karjat?
Late July to early September is peak flow. The falls start around the second week of June once the monsoon sets in, and most are reduced to a trickle by mid October. Weekdays and early mornings are far quieter than weekend afternoons.
Is it safe to swim in Karjat waterfalls?
Only in the shallow base pools at Bhivpuri and Palasdari when the flow is moderate, and never after heavy overnight rain. Deep pools like Zenith have claimed lives. Local police close access on high-flow days and it is wise to follow their call.
How far is Bhivpuri waterfall from Karjat?
Bhivpuri Road station is about 10 km from Karjat station and about 14 km from the Villa Montana estate on the Karjat-Murbad Road, roughly a 25 minute drive. The waterfall is a 15 minute walk from the station side parking.
Are there entry fees for Karjat waterfalls?
Most have no official entry fee, but expect to pay for parking near Bhivpuri and Kondana on weekends, typically Rs 50 to 100 for a car. Some village committees collect a small maintenance charge in peak season. Carry cash; nobody takes UPI at a waterfall.
